- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe Case for Humanity is a must read for all, but very much so a must read for the generation of soon to be world leaders, many of whom are sitting in classrooms all over the world trying to seek direction from their academic institutions as how to accomplish in the world what has not been done before. As a university student myself, the Case for Humanity is just the kind of direction I needed in order to tap into my inner faith in humanity again, which I had started to lose sight of as my collection of classes, books, and theories on the atrocities and injustices of this world grew with each academic year that passed. I wanted to be inspired again. The Case for Humanity did just that for me. Some of the world’s greatest minds grace this book, coming together in an arena whereby we, the audience can finally see the ways in which many of their thoughts and philosophies were threaded together. We all have something to offer our world and we do not need to let the injustices in today’s world be swept under the rug, or for political leaders to lose sight of the agenda for humanity. It is very much so within our grasp to spark a positive shift in our world’s politics and ethics and The Case for Humanity is just the right catalyst for such a task.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA most fascinating and truly inspiring read. The 'extraordinary' session is extraordinary in more ways than one. I would have thought it inconceivable to create a dialogue between these great minds that remained faithful to words they actually uttered and to keep a conversation flowing - but that is exactly what the author has done. She has taken us down a road from which anyone interested in introspection and depth would find it difficult to turn back from. The leadership chapter is most enlightening. It comes at a time when the globe is bereft of authentic leaders such as Mandela, King, Havel, Gandhi... whose natural authority made not not just statesmen but 'worldsmen' and whose absence has left us in the wilderness, resorting to violence and division that de-humanises our fellow-humans. Ms Sherif shows us the answer, and it is not an ephemeral dream accessible by just a few, indeed we can all reach it, and must do so if we want to 'tame the savageness of man and make life on this earth gentle'. This is a 'must read' and 'must implement' for any global leader.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWith the upcoming World Humanitarian Summit just around the corner, this book is a MUST READ. Yasmine Sherif draws from history and her own rich, personal journey to celebrate our humanity. When humanity is challenged by conflict or peace, by selfishness and selfless empathy, what distinguishes us is our ability to choose a wholeheartedness that is central to our own survival. Ms. Sherif does not shy away from looking directly into the rage and vulnerability of the choices that we face. However, her book also surfaces our potential... to always do better, and to foster inspirational communities. Humans may continue to make mistakes, but The Case for Humanity gives hope that we always have known better and may one day realize our true potential.
If you are interested in understanding how the United Nations really works..... If you are a deep thinker.... If you believe in an optimistic future but are not afraid of openly considering the trials and tribulations humanity continues to brave.... You will love this book.

How many times have we international aid workers witnessed selfish ego-choices in our daily work? But cynicism bears only more cynicism and leads to a selective application of human rights and justice. So what could we actually achieve when we all would make more choices for the greater good, for humanity?
Yasmine Sherif's fabulous book is an exceptionally inspiring plea. She reminds us of why the United Nations were founded. She reminds us of what they stand for. She reminds each and every one of us of our capabilities if we only dare to live up to them. She inspires and spurs us to do so!
She poured her heart and soul into this book, and thus, has managed something very little authors can claim: Her book connects directly with us on a very deep level.
Thank you, Yasmine, for kindling our fire!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOne of most fascinating books about humanity , moral code and best we as humans have created. I read it after Yuval noah Harari's book " Brief history of humankind" where all explained with physics and chemistry and here I found a very convincing different story on who we are at core, where the values come and where we need to go. Thank you Yasmine, you also were lucky to meet so many bright souls in UN in last many years, I had my own experience with some bright pages and some grim bureaucracy, but surely it is a force of good especially in our age with confused direction. Strongly recommend reading those looking for emotional and intellectual reflections on our core and purpose
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the most inspiring book I have read in a long time. We spend much of our time and energy running away from the injustice in the world - looking the other way, changing the channel, shrugging our shoulders and trying to convince ourselves that there is nothing we can do. This book spurs us to listen to our inner voice of humanity, and to get off our chairs and take action, however insignificant that action may seem (it isn't). The book should be required reading for national and international policy makers - we might have a better world. For sure Sherif will be an important figure in the intellectual landscape for some time to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA compelling page turner. This book cleverly utilizes the voices past and present, known and unknown of the world's greatest leaders and thinkers in the setting of the UN. Each chapter makes one stop and reflect about what is humanity and why it remains out of our collective grasp.
