Last week, Nigeria’s Education in Emergencies Working Group facilitated a workshop on developing a more gender-responsive and localized humanitarian response. Supported by the GEC and Education Cannot Wait (ECW), it involved key partners working in EiE, Child Protection, and GBV. Engaging in dialogue with national and local Women-Led Organizations (WLOs) was a highlight, where aspirations to take concrete actions in advancing the participation of women in leadership roles during crises was the focal point. Enhancing the leadership of WLOs is key part of responding to the needs of women and girls in emergency settings. 💥

On 16 June, we co-organised a side event at the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment that spotlighted how crucial it is to retain #EducationInEmergencies as a priority in humanitarian interventions. With unprecedented funding cuts facing the sector, the schooling of millions of girls and boys are at risk. As Hazel De Wet from UNICEF put it: "Bold action is no longer optional, it is necessary." The event also highlighted how Women-led Organisations are key to service delivery in education, but too often remain margianalised in wider decision-making in the sector. Fajer Rabia, Executive Director of the PAGE Foundation, said: “We are asked to implement, but not to actually shape programs. True inclusion means our early involvement in projects, including to set strategy.” Huge thanks to the other excellent speakers, Mulikat Bamidele from GHIV Africa, Jihane Latrous from Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and mendy marsh from VOICE Amplified, and the moderator Michel Anglade from Save the Children International. On Day 2 of our policy dialogue in Abuja, the spotlight was on survivors and the power of education as a form of reparation. With the support of the Global Survivors Fund and Education Cannot Wait (ECW) the Neem Foundation is delivering education that is more than just teaching - it is healing. Around 200 children in Borno - survivors or those affected by conflict-related sexual violence - are accessing trauma-informed education tailored to their lived experiences. For many, the traditional classroom is a distant memory, if it ever existed at all. Years of missed schooling, psychological scars, and unmet needs demand more than textbooks. This needs a different kind of learning environment - one that repairs, restores, and rebuilds. Education as reparation does just that. It combines learning with psychosocial support, teachers trained in trauma-sensitive approaches, and counselling. Here, healing isn’t an add-on. It’s part of the curriculum. Our full-day policy dialogue explored how to scale up such interventions across Nigeria and beyond. Survivors, civil society actors, and government officials gathered to discuss a path forward - one that ensures education is not only accessible, but reparative.
